  1. A lot of people go into detail, ranting on about how religion is ridiculous, trying to prove common sense to idiots. Simple jokes like this are much more palatable. Very nice.

  12. dja87, no offense, because I understand ignorance is a crazy freaking thing, that is the exact reason we have this crazy thing called religion and faith in the first place because faith = hope, faith is nothing but hope, just a new fancy word that religion came up with, sorry to burst your religion bubble but your comment is just completely retarded, I have hope for the future, but no faith so…get yourself straight and stop letting your attachment to religion cloud your logic like many others, I “hope” you don’t take this so negative, I just get so pissed off at how much religion is ruining this world, and I “hope” you realize in sometime how right I am, dja87 take the time to think for yourself instead of others pushing backward logic down your throat

I’m very curious to know where you get the idea that hope is exclusive to faith. I have lots of hope for the world. I have hope for the environment, hope for human rights, hope for clean water, hope for treating all people as human beings, etc. I have enough hope to volunteer 10 hours a week for the food shelf and habitat for humanity (which I do). I have hope that my children will grow up in a better world than I did. I have hope that love, not war, will resolve conflicts in the future, and that humanity can find peace with each other and with our growing technology. All of this hope comes from the human heart, and I have been godless for many years now.

    @Nortlov
First of all, Buddhism is indeed a religion. Buddhism as practiced by hippies and freethinkers in the West may beg to differ, but there are those who have been subjugated by Buddhism. There are many different Buddhist sects. Some of them are more dogmatic than others. Often religious beliefs in various “Buddhist” practices stem from the culture of the country, such as in China and Taiwan where Taoism and Chinese folk gods find their way into Buddhism. Buddhism also has preached a variation of India’s caste system in some countries. There is nothing that can be “proved” by religion, however, other than the boundlessness of human gullibility.

I look forward to a world without gods. I may not live to see it but I’m confident my children will see a planet where the influence of imaginary spiritual/political/anti-ethical dictators is frowned upon by the masses. At least, I HOPE I’m right (snicker).

    • I don’t like the word religion. To me it just sounds absurd. I do not deny the fact that Buddhism is a religion, but the same time I think Buddhism deserved more than being called just a religion. I was raised as a Buddhist, and I agree there was a lot of BS, like reincarnation, reborn after death, karma and all the other superstitions. I mean, how would they know what happen when we die and the concepts of karma. Story of his life have been told slightly differently in different countries. and I never heard Buddha preaching about cast system. Even though I was raised in a Buddhist family I wouldn’t call myself a Buddhist or an Atheist, I just don’t like labels. Overall, in all my life, in everything I’ve learn about Buddhism I’ve never been tough to intolerance in Buddhism. I accept Buddha as a teacher, a philosopher, his words give me ideas, and tell me how to live a good life. I believe in a lot of concepts about Buddhism. Like mediating, achieving inner peace, mastering your own mind. This is why I believe Buddhism deserve more than that.

“Buddhism has the characteristics of what would be expected in a cosmic religion for the future: It transcends a personal God, avoids dogmas and theology; it covers both the natural and spritual; and it is based on a religious sense aspiring from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity.”

To say “Buddhism is X” is foolish. Einstein was simply elucidating the more scientifically amenable aspects of certain forms of Buddhism, and then mistakenly labeling that collection of facts “Buddhism.” Some Buddhist systems even posit a creator deity. Moji, above, had it right. The only way to disagree would be to commit a no true Scotsman fallacy.

  20. Why is Buddhism taking all the hits here? How about those Catholics, eh?

    Reply

  21. Honestly, I know and have seen a lot of religious idiots and others pushing their faiths on people, but from my observations, Atheists are the bigger assholes. I grew up around strict Roman Catholics. I went to a Catholic school for the first 3 years of high school. I was Confirmed into the Faith. I was an Atheist during most of that.

You would think that I had the worst things to say about them, but actually, I had a bigger problem with the Atheists in the school than the Catholics. Sure, they didn’t agree with my beliefs or other viewpoints, such as me being bisexual, but I was still accepted and such by them. The Atheists that I knew were true assholes. They were the most insulting people I ever knew. They had no respect for anyone, or their beliefs.

Now, I’m not saying that all Atheists are like that. Just the ones I’ve encountered. That’s the way the public views them, due to them being more outspoken than the “whatever-floats-your-boat” Atheists. Asshole know-it-alls. It’s the same thing with the religious people. Due to the crazy Protestants and Catholics out there who never got a proper edjumacation, the general view of Christians is redneck retards.

There are good people in every belief system. There are educated people in every belief system. Generalizations based on the assholes and retards that twist and pervert the meaning of their religions to fit their own agendas and to discriminate are stupid.

Personally, I’d rather believe in something than nothing. This has led me on my recent search of spirituality. I’m not going back to the Abrahamic religions, though. Already tried them, and didn’t suit me.

If people are going to criticize religion, though, how about criticizing all religions, and not just the Abrahamic ones? All the Atheists I’ve encountered have only talked about them, but not about the Baha’i Faith, Sikhism, Jain, or Yazdanism. There is some criticism of Hinduism and Buddhism, but those are more left alone for some reason. Don’t know why Buddhism isn’t criticized more, though. Maybe because at it’s core, there is not a real creator God?

  22. For one, this picture is a joke and everyone needs to lighten up.

For two, all organized religions (Atheism included) are bullshit. Religion is just like Communism. At its core, it seems like a good idea, but it can never be successfully practised without zealots taking over and cramming their beliefs and lifestyles down the throats of those whose views differ from their own.

I do, however, think that “Moji” is the most insightful and levelheaded person on this thread.

  23. I get the feeling that a lot of these religious guys really want to do some incredibly cruel things but are restrained by their beliefs. Religion is hope for a better world? Damn, just go do it without getting on your knees and see what kind of results you get! I have no faith in a greater power and have no real desire to be cruel to anyone. I hope for a good future and believe it can happen if people are willing to do the right thing.

The atheists I know could care less how you live your life up to a point: Do you take care of your family? Do you help out in your community? Do you genuinely feel bad when you f0ck up and try to make amends and not behave that way again? That’s all anyone expects and from what I know of the Christian faith that’s all Christ was looking for too. If the only thing keeping you from climbing a clock tower with a rifle strapped to your a55 is your faith then maybe it ain’t your faith that’s the problem.

I get tired of the zealots trying to convince the rest of us that we all want to molest kids, sell fake prayer cloths to the elderly and embezzle from our followers but we won’t want to if we accept the magic zombie Jesus into our hearts. I really only want to go to work, earn a living, take care of my family and enjoy my life. I have no desire to f0ck anybody and those people who occasionally f0ck me over, oh well, sh1t happens… By the way, the majority of people who have cheated me, stolen from me or did things that I feel were against the teachings of Christ were self proclaimed Christians.

They are reciting works of all the saints belonging to different communities available at that time in in India and had there been the Christians here in India, their works could have got a place in Shri Guru granth sahibji. It must be accepted that none of the communities in the world are matching the maintenance of Gurdwaras when the Sikhs are providing boarding and lodging to all who are visiting these shrines. They are keeping these shrines well maintained, neat and clean and they are present here for prayer and recitation daily and twice a day.

  29. There’s no conversation here. Just a lot of preaching to the choir (no pun intended) and shouting down anyone who dares to disagree. Hate, persecution isn’t the exclusive property of organized religion, though they are notoriously good at it. It’s a Human thing.

After reading the primarily hostile, hate-filled comments on perhaps 50 Atheist sites, I can’t help but wonder, what would those Atheists do, with the power that organized religion has enjoyed for so long? Would organized religion be outlawed? Would people be punished for believing in a god? I realize that’s probably not what most of us really want. But you should listen to yourselves talk. It’s kind of creepy.

Most Atheist sites I’ve seen (and I’m not saying this is one, specifically, although I am responding to the comments on this page) have two main features: a claim to intellectual awareness and facility, and a pernicious hatred of religion and the belief in god or any other named Creator or Universal governing intelligence. I haven’t heard anything about what’s being done to free yourselves of religious domination.

I’m sure there are sites whose purpose is to organize those interested in Freedom of/from religion, to change legislation, to remove those pesky religious references from our money, the pledge, and other conventions. In the U.S. anyway. And if there aren’t any, why not use some of that intellect to start one?

The anonymity of the web is a haven for those who aren’t normally heard, and a playground for people who have succumbed to their own sense of powerlessness in this world, and can think of nothing else but lashing out. Which one to be is up to the individual.

No. Atheism is, by definition, NON-BELIEF, that is, NON-FAITH. Atheism posits nothing to have faith in, it merely rejects the proposition “God exists.” The burden of proof lies on the one making the proposition. Would you like to prove that I DON’T have a million dollars worth of Martian currency in my pocket? If you reject this proposition, do you do so on faith? If you can appreciate why you would not have the burden of proof in this instance, then please stop spreading ignorance about atheism.

There is a simple solution to your problem. DO. MORE. RESEARCH. Why do you assume that because you are ignorant of something it must not exist? That’s not logical. Also, you speak of “Atheists” as though there is some institution called “Atheism,” to which all atheists belong and are loyal to (which by your description of it is merely an outlet for anti-religious vitriol). Again, you are simply ignorant of the reality, blinded by your own limited experience of the world. First, atheism is merely the non-belief in gods. There are atheists that go to church or synagogue. There are atheists that are not opposed to religion. There are atheists who hate religion. There are atheists who believe in ghosts. There are atheists who are general skeptics. There are atheists who drink whiskey out of a jar. And there are religious people who spout venom in the direction of other religions. The hatred of disagreeable ideas is not exclusive to atheists, nor is it inclusive of all atheists. Atheists are just people who don’t believe in gods.

  36. Regarding Justice’s comment about religion, spec. religious conflict costing lots and lots of lives: If it wasn’t religion, we’d invent something else to fight over. We’re human. It is, unfortunately, what we do.

Regarding Casey’s argument that religion is just like Communism in that in practice zealots always gain control of it: While true in almost all cases, I think I have found a loophole. In a religion with only one member, every member is moderate with respect to the set of all members of the religion. If every member of a religion is moderate, it is difficult for any of them to be extremeist. Furthermore, with only one member, there is not likely to be sufficient structure or organization for any extremeist member to cause much trouble. And if they do, they will have the appearance of just being some crazy person who is either way off their meds or dangerously undiagnosed, and either way needs to be restrained in some manner.

A few months ago I invented my own religion. Mostly for fun. Not planning to shove it down anyone’s throat, or even go out of my way to recruit anyone. And I’m always finding more and more benefits. It has no name. It needs no name. Since I am the only member, you can just talk about me instead of my religion. My religion as an entity separate from myself has no agency. All the agency is mine. I am accountable for all of my actions. And it feels awesome.

“Atheism requires the same level of faith as any religion. Belief in the unprovable requires faith. Atheism is AS unprovable as any religion.”

You should not make a random statement (such as ‘God does exist’) and assume that the people who does not even care about it have faith.
Faith by it self is irrational, it does not expect any kind of evidence to support it, in fact, the evidence would deny it.

I think that the people who qualify them self as atheist are trying to make a point,”religion is a silly idea and we would do better without it” AND THAT’S IT.

Atheists DO NOT need to prove that god does not exist. Thats the religion work, but again, proves would deny faith and without faith god is nothing (paraphrasing Douglas Adams) Religion expects people to think like children: “Do it just because”, thats what faith means.

    @Maria
“what would those Atheists do, with the power that organized religion has enjoyed for so long?” <– that's one really good question.

The main issue with religious people is they're not willing to change their minds, arguing with them is pointless.

Most of atheists are closed minded as well when it comes to religion but they have a good reason, the truth is no religious people will try to prove god exists by stating logic arguments, they tried but they're just not good at it. If they were, they would be atheist. (ok, that was just mean)
In the other hand, religious people is closed minded because faith requires to be like that. If you're willing to accept arguments about the questionable existence of god, then you do not have faith, you're either stupid or trying to fit in a particular group.

I understand and hope that I am wrong about religion. I want to be wrong because I dont want to just stop existing after death. This is one of the reasons that I think religion came about. It is natural for humans to want to exist. If we didnt our species would go extinct. There is fear in everyone about truely being dead when they die. By that I mean to stop existing. Like I said I too inclued myself in this desire.

If you just did it out of anger then you should stop acting like you dont believe just because you are mad at God for not getting your way. Go back to believeing its a much happier life.
